Preparedness

What is: Preparedness?

Preparedness refers to anything that is done before a disaster in order to guarantee an effective response once the disaster strikes. It includes communicating clear disaster warnings as early as possible and evacuating people from dangerous locations. It also deals with educating members of the public about disasters.

People react better during emergencies if they know what they’re supposed to do. Being prepared can reduce the feelings of fear, anxiety and panic that come with a disaster. When you know what to do, where to go and who to talk to – you feel confident that you and your loved ones will be safe.

During an emergency, authorities will be there to offer help, should you need it – but it’s important to be able to take care of yourself, in case they can’t reach you in time or if they’re busy elsewhere.

Preparedness and knowledge go hand in hand, it includes – knowing how to follow disaster warnings, knowing where your emergency shelters are, knowing the procedures to follow during a disaster and knowing basic first aid.
